Community Column by Don Butt (June 2017)

Town of Mono, ON (Don Butt) I want to talk about some items concerning safe driving. I  likely have mentioned this before but last year, a change in the Highway Traffic Act concerning crosswalks came into effect. When you stop at a marked crosswalk, you must wait until all people using the walk have completed crossing to the opposite side. I have watched carefully and some are obeying this new rule and many are not. Don’t forget!!

There are some other items that are not really covered by the act but are a problem sometimes. Have you ever approached a driveway or intersection where a vehicle is waiting to turn and the driver is looking only one way? You think "Please look my way" as you are in flowing traffic and can’t stop. Another one is if you are stopped at a light in the through lane and the driver in the left turn lane has pulled up so far that you can’t see oncoming traffic. This is scary! Do I move out a little and risk my front end or do I wait for the light to change? You decide!

On Sat. May 20th Mono community Policing held it’s now annual "Bike Rodeo". It was quite successful with almost 20 kids attending who I’m sure learned a lot from OPP Constable Paul Nancekivell who runs the Rodeo for Mono Community Policing. We had some wonderful prizes for the kids from Canadian Tire (Orangeville) and a beautiful Bike Helmet donated by Cycling Elements bike shop in Orangeville. Thank you to both companies for your help. To the kids who participated, Safe biking and have fun!

Safety Tip
