Community Column by Don Butt (October 2016)

Town of Mono, ON (Don Butt) I want to talk about turn signals and the use thereof! As I travel around I see quite a few drivers that either forget to use their turn signals or put them on late, just as they are turning. Anyone can see you are turning, but the purpose of turn signals is to let other drivers know what you intend to do. Putting them on at least 300 feet from the intended turn gives other drivers a chance to adjust. Please try it next time. It is much safer.

Our Road Watch signs are now up on Hwy. 10 north from Orangeville to Primrose as we requested! Please use our system and report dangerous and aggressive drivers. For everyone’s information, here is the way the system works. If you see a dangerous or aggressive driver and you have a cell phone call # 677 to give your report. On a landline phone call 1-888-310-1122.

If you are using one of our forms, drop it at Primrose OPP or in the box at Mono Plaza. What happens is this :
  1. A letter is sent to the licensed owner outlining the infractions.
  2. On a second report received on the same vehicle a repeat letter is sent by police and an officer will make contact to address the problem.
  3. A THIRD REPORT OR COMPLAINT WILL RESULT IN A THIRD LETTER AND A PERSONAL VISIT FROM A POLICE OFFICER WHO MAY CONSIDER CHARGES OR PUT THE VEHICLE UNDER SURVEILLANCE.
If you send in a report you will remain anonymous, unless you choose to pursue a detailed investigation that may result in charges being laid, and require a court appearance .

We find that most calls now are by cell phone and this is fine, as long as Police receive the information. Please make use of this excellent program which is in use all over North America. Help to get dangerous drivers off the road or retrained. The life you save could be someone you know or a relative!

Safety Tip – Match speed with road and weather conditions. (this tip comes to you from Doug Annett and the Skid Control School at Oakville,Ont.)
